Sergio was born in Gragnano Scatizzi, in the province of Lucca, in 1918 and spent his youth in the countryside of Lucca in Valdinievole. Then, followed by a stay in Naples, approximately one year, followed by a transfer to Rome, where he could get close to the lively art scene of the capital, that immediately appealed to him and where he met Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphael.

In the same year he met Ardengo Soft, while in a subsequent visit to Paris, in 1948, went back in touch with Comisso and De Pisis. This series of meetings and travel greatly influenced the growth of the artist's career, decided to develop a language that was very personal, the romantic style and lighter, compared to the concreteness of language typically Tuscan.
In Montecatini held his first solo exhibition in 1949, only landscapes, Ariel at the Library, while the following year he exhibited at the XXV Venice Biennale. Also followed the Prize of Painting "Bagni di Lucca", opportunity that allowed him to personally Carlo Carra, President of the Jury.
From 1951 is bound in friendship with Ottone Rosai, which he attended for many years the study of Street Artists.
