Salvatore Fiume: painter, sculptor, architect, writer and designer, was born in Comiso, in Sicily, in 1915. Thanks to a scholarship, only sixteen years, he entered the Royal Institute of Art of the Book of Urbino, where he was able to obtain a thorough knowledge of printing techniques. Already in 1936 he went to Milan, where he met the biggest names in the city's artistic and intellectual culture. Seemingly at odds with his dream to succeed as a painter, The first success came through a literary work, the novel Viva Giocondal, published in 1943.
In 1946 the decision to devote himself entirely to painting, settling in Canzo, near Como, adapted to study a textile mill where nineteenth-, from 1952, also became his residence. His first exhibition was held in Milan, at the Galleria Borromini in 1949, where his works kindled the interest of critical. Show, Durane which one of his works was purchased by Alfred H. Barr Jr., Director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and that earned him an invitation to the Venice Biennale 1950.
Among the important commissions of the early fifties there were: a series of works for the meeting rooms of the magazines "Life" and "Time" in New York, a series of ten paintings for the industrialist Bruno Buitoni and a huge painting on the walls of the first class lounge of the ocean liner Andrea Doria, commissioned by Gio Ponti.
Since the sixties, followed the experiences abroad. A traveling exhibition in various museums in Germany, a trip to Ethiopia, followed by a retrospective at the Palazzo Reale in 1974, occasion in which he presented the African Mona Lisa, now kept in the Vatican Museums.
In the seventies, he dedicated himself, free, to restore life to the historic town of Calabria Fiumefreddo Bruzio, through his works. Followed by attendance at numerous solo and group exhibitions.
In an exhibition at the Galleria in Milan Artesanterasmo, in 1994, officially debuted as a sculptor, despite being devoted to this activity since the Forties. In 1950 his first experience as a designer, when he made the sketches of the sets and costumes La Vida Breve di Manuel de Falla, activity that continued until the early sixties, bringing in the major Italian and foreign theaters.
Continued, parallel, also work as a writer, publishing three novels, numerous accounts, nine comedies, a tragedy and two collections of poems.
In 1988, he was awarded, at the University of Palermo, an honorary degree in Modern Literature in recognition of his work as a narrator, poet and playwright.
He died in Milan in 1997.
His works are now in some of the greatest museums in the world such as the Vatican Museums, The Hermitage Museum S. Petersburg, MoMA in New York, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan.
